The European Commission has launched the 12th edition of European Mobility Week (EMW) this Monday.
Coinciding with the European
Year of Air, European Mobility Week runs from 16-22 September and aims to
raise awareness of the impacts of transport on air quality and help citizens
make more sustainable transport choices.
The goal of this campaign is to encourage European
citizens to improve their health and wellbeing by adopting more sustainable
mobility habits. During Mobility Week,
over 2,000 cities and towns in 43 countries will organise activities such as
flash mobs, car free events, conferences and debates, creative competitions, as
well as cycling and walking tours.
Traffic is a growing source of urban
air pollution and local authorities are encouraged to develop urban
transport plans that meet modern sustainable mobility demands while also
involving active participation from citizens.
In Brussels, various activities
will take place across the city during mobility week, culminating in Car Free
Sunday on 22 September, when hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians will have the
streets to themselves. To me, this is one
of the most pleasant days to cycle in Brussels and a great opportunity to visit
markets and events or just go out for a coffee with friends. Check out the photos
we took from the 2012 Car Free Sunday and come along this year to see how
Brussels shines.
