More than 1,400 companies around the world are donating 1% of their annual sales to environmental non-profits, contributing so far over €55 million euro ($70 million). And now Sustainability Consult is also part of the 1% for the Planet business alliance whose aim is to contribute in a responsible way to a better environment.
It all started in 2002 when Yvon Chouinard, founder and CEO of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, created an organisation based on their own business models that functions as a platform between business and environmental non-profits. In this way, companies donate 1% of their annual revenue to certified organisations, in a direct and independent manner, minimising bureaucracy and simplifying the decision-making process.
Member companies are encouraged to develop independent relationships with the organisations they support. Since 2002, 1% for the Planet has been growing steadily, reaching the 1,000 member milestone in 2009 and now being around 1,425 members and contributing to more than 2,700 environmental organisations all over the world. We’re member number 2698.
Committing to 1% means that each member recognises the need to take action to improve our environment and to assure we leave today a better legacy for tomorrow.
For us, becoming a member of 1% is a way to be part of the solution. We share the 1% for the Planet views and principles and we are proud to be part of an international network of committed businesses and people moving towards a more sustainable future. We’re looking to support 1% in building brand recognition in Europe and hope that our example inspires others to get onboard this excellent initiative.
